THE MAORI RELIGION
A little about the Maori
The Maori religion evolved from a Polynesian culture and there are approximately 525,000 people a part of the Maori religion. The Maori religion is traditionally based on ancestor worship, the Maori are the tangata whenua, (the indigenous people) of New
Zealand. They came to New Zealand more than 1000 years ago from their mythical Polynesian
homeland of Hawaiki. Today Maori make up 14% of the New Zealand population and
their history, language and traditions are very important to New Zealand.
